Professor Jesús Torrecilla specializes in Spanish Literature of the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. He studied at the Universidad Complutense (Madrid), and earned his B.A. degree at the Universidad de La Laguna (Canary Islands). He studied at Ludwig-Maximiliam Universität (Munich, Germany), and received his Ph.D. from University of Southern California. Between 1991 and 1996 he worked as an Assistant Professor at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, and in 1997 he became a member of the faculty at UCLA. His research and teaching interests focus on the idea of nation builiding, marginality, and power relations. In his books and articles he argues that national identities and power relations are key factors in the configuration of Spanish culture. He has published ten scholarly books and numerous articles. Currently he is working on a book on the origins of Spanish Liberalism. Jesús Torrecilla is also the author of three novels. In 1998 he received the Lengua de Trapo award for his novel Tornados.
