Description:

This five-day workshop will examine the historical, sociocultural, political and economic forces associated with migration to and within the Americas, with a focus on Latin America. The workshop will feature interdisciplinary presentations and discussions on patterns of migration and a variety of related topics, from immigration policies to the diverse experiences of men, women and children. Experts will introduce various texts and primary sources to shed light on how migration has shaped Latin American cultures and societies from ancient times through the early 21st Century.

The growth of the Latino and Latin American descent population in the United States, and the LAUSD’s new Ethnic Studies requirement, make this a timely workshop for educators in Los Angeles. This course will provide teachers with the knowledge and resources with which they can understand better the backgrounds and cultures of many students in their classrooms. The workshop will include curriculum sessions to facilitate discussions of how to integrate new material into the classroom
