Black in Print examines the role of narrative, from traditional writing to new media, in conversations about race and belonging in the isthmus. It argues that the production, circulation, and consumption of stories has led to a trans-isthmian imaginary that splits the region along racial and geographic lines into a white-mestizo Pacific coast, an Indigenous core, and a Black Caribbean.
Dr. Jennifer Gómez Menjívar (Ph.D. Ohio State U) is Professor in the Department of Media Arts and director of the MA in Media Industries and Critical Cultural Studies at University of North Texas. Her research interests include Indigenous Sovereignty Media, Latin American and Latinx Media, Grassroots and Participatory Media Practices, Cinematic Adaptation, Digital Culture, Critical Theory, and Media Linguistics. Besides Black in Print, her books include Tropical Tongues: Language Ideologies, Endangerment, and Minority Languages in Belize, and multiple edited volumes.
